The 12th Annual Roundup & Review

The 12th Annual Roundup & Review was held at the Oklahoma State Fair in Oklahoma City, OK on September 14-16, 2006. The weather was very cooperative.  We saw a lot of new faces and some of the “old faithful” ones too. Entries totaled up to be around 900 by the end of the show. Approximately 200 to 250 horses were entered from as far away as Canada.

The judges selected for this year were Gary Webb of Ash Grove, MO and Rebecca Frerking of Washington, KS. Vicki Austin of Vicksburg, MI judged the youth events. Ring Stewards were Deb Adams of Henderson, NE and Rick DuBay of Fort Gratiot, MI. For the third year the show office was managed by Diann Vipond of Kalkaska, MI and assisting her was Jane Pence also of Michigan. Thanks to these women the show office was professional and efficient.

The voice behind the sound system may have sounded familiar to some of our folks. This year the announcer was Steve Tomaski of Johannesburg, MI. Steve was the inviting voice in the morning and the entertaining voice throughout each day. Unfortunately, Steve was having some health problems so whenever he needed a break, Dan Jordan of Blanchard, Ok took the reigns. Our prayers are with Steve for a speedy recovery.

This year’s souvenir program cover was by well known artist Jack Wells. The cover featured an original print entitled “Lil’ Maverick”. Jack Wells is an amazing western artist. His Studio, Gallery & Hideout is located in the Historic Stockyard of Oklahoma City. The original “Lil’ Maverick” was matted and framed and was on display during the show to be auctioned off Saturday before the awards ceremony with proceeds going to the youth. The auction was put on by Dan Jordan and Rick Huffstutlar on horse back. It was a lot of fun to watch these guys stir up the croud. Jack Well himself was on hand for the auction. I believe Vicki Austin was the proud owner of the picture. Thanks so much to Jack Well for the donation of the print.

The state fair provided the photographers this year. John & Patty Branam were the photographers and they did a great job and took some incredible shots throughout the show. They were impressed with the friendliness of our FQHR people. That is always good to hear.

Thursday morning September 14th, the show began with cutting classes. We continued through the day with the cutting cattle classes and speed events. We then took a break from the show for the Opening Ceremonies. Leading the Grand Entry was Joel & Sherrie Shook of Sterling Co, Judges Chairman, Bob Walton of Rosebush, MI, FQHR Advisory board member Vicki Austin of Vicksburg, MI, Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture Terry Peach and Mallory Shook of Sterling CO. They arrived in style on the Express Clydesdales Coach. Next in the procession was Mahala Keller in her tribal clothes leading in her horse. Following her were all of the Affiliates represented at the Roundup. The Oklahoma Affiliate had several of their members in matching white shirts and red bandanas and their youth were in matching red t-shirts. The two flag girls were Stephanie Bowen on Mr Golden Bow and Jessica McCommas on Shining Lika Diamond. They started at the back of the arena on horseback carrying the American flags, then they crossed in front of the arena and stopped in front of the coach where Mallory Shook sang the “National Anthem”. Then Terry Peach gave a warm invitation from the governor’s office and stated how much they looked forward to a long relationship with the Foundation Quarter Horse Registry. Joel Shook welcomed everyone and presented a “Breeders Circle” award to FQHR lifetime members Doug & Linda Ritz of Fredonia, KS. After the opening ceremonies the show continued with the team events going on into the early morning hours. Then at 8:00 AM Friday morning the roping classes began followed by handy ranch, ranch reining, ranch pleasure and team doctoring. Saturday morning started with the youth classes. We were very pleased with the number of youth that participated this year. After the youth was the in hand trail classes and then the halter classes. We saw some very large halter classes and some very good foundation horses. Once the halter classes were over the show office took a break to tally the points and to get ready for the awards ceremony.

The FQHR and the OKFQHR gave a horse trailer for the Open High Point Award. This was the first year for such an award. There were also other great awards including saddles, ranch signs, belt buckles, plaques and pictures. The 2006 FQHR Roundup & Review Champions were as follows: Open High Point-Joe Goodenow of Michigan exhibiting Docs N Diamonds, Open High Point Reserve-Susie Walton of Michigan exhibiting Lenas Trey Tivitos, Amateur High Point-Mindy Costello of Texas exhibiting Miss King Wimpess, Amateur High Point Reserve-Denny Mohr of Nebraska exhibiting Drink A Gin, Novice High Point-Victoria Bowen of Oklahoma exhibiting Justin Credible Pine, Open Versatility- Kellen Youngedyke of Michigan exhibiting Rockin T Drift, Amateur Versatility-Mindy Costello of Texas exhibiting Miss King Wimpess.

We also did something new this year and divided the senior and junior youth awards. The quality of people and horses that came from all over the country proved this year’s Roundup to be one of the best yet. Congratulations to all of the exhibitors this year. Many traveled a great distance to be a part of the FQHR Roundup and Review. This would not have been possible without you. Hope to see you all next year!
